Our  culture  is our  great asset.  All  religions  preach  that  God is one and the ultimate goal  in life is to realize  God.  Salvation   is  the end of our journey on earth.  And our religious  beliefs are kept awakened by our places of worship and religious centers.   These should  not be neglected at any cost.  Great  care  should be taken  to  protect  them  and  to  see  that  they keep  fulfilling the task they are  meant for  because  these centers  of  learning  are  the first steps  towards our sadhana to attain  God.  Neglecting  them would only  mean that we are suffocating ourselves to death by our negative thoughts.

Baba looked like a muslim,  but he planted a Tulasi tree in front of the masjid.  A Tulasi plant is usually seen in the front  yard of a Hindu house hold, and only an Agnihotri (family) keeps burning in his  house.  Baba did all this in the Masjid.  This enabled all that the people of all religions to embrace Sai and His Dwarakamai Masjid was visited by all.

This is the meaning implied in the Aarathi songs of Shirdi Sai Baba.  All the negative feelings should turn to ash by the bhakthi that we experience for the paramatma - Lord Sai Baba - it is only then  that  detachment from  the worldly  ties is possible.  When we light lamps in our homes,  We invoke the blessings of God.  We pray for good things to happen.  We even equate light to God.  May be to indicate all this, Lord Sai lit lamps and kept  them burning to drive home His massage.

After this, Sai set upon another task.  He lit lamps in the ranshackled Dwarakamai that Sai lived and took great care to see that they kept burning all night long.  In the beginning when Sai was offered dakshina, Sai rejected to take,  but later,  Sai accepted a paise  or two to buy firewood for the dhuni, oil and wicks for the lamps.  Lighting lamps was symbolic  - Sai wanted all the mankind to understand that the wicks denoted our senses - anger, jealousy, contempt, hatred;  Oil symbolised detachment and the light Gurubhakthi
