The few things that Shirdi Sai Baba needed were, a litle tobacco, matchbox, a piece of cloth and some water as Sai used to smoke chillum.  He never kept any spare cloths. Sai used to wash His kafni that He wore once in 3 - 4  months only after it got very muddy and when it tore, He needed a new one.  These were taken care of by Kasinath or Appakothe. The other things that Sai needed, and where Mahalsapathi lent a hand were to grind the tobacco leaves into fine poweder., prepare the chillum for smoking, fetching some water to wet the cloth and clean up the area around the neem tree where Baba would spend His time.

Blessed are the people who could spend time with Sai in the initial days of His return to Shirdi.  Mahalsapathi, his friends Kasinath and Appajogle used to sit with Sai everyday. Whatever limited material things or provisions Sai needed were provided by Kasinath and Appajogle.  Mahalsapathi as he was poor, used to do all the physical work that was need to keep Sai comfortable.  During those days, once Appakote Patil along with his wife Baijabai visited Baba.  On seeing the couple, Baba rose, walked towards them and greeted them warmly.  He said that Baijabai was His sister.  The couple were greatly moved by the affection showered on them.  Baijabai felt greatly honoured that the  Lord Himself has considered her His sibling.  She took an oath that she would partake of food, only after it was offered to Baba.  This act of hers which she maintained till the last days of her life, invited Sai's grace.
